Castiel comes from a world on the brink of collapse due to the Biblical apocalypse. Specifically, a major factor in this collapse was a worldwide pandemic. He lost his powers after being abandoned by his own kind, and was thrown into an incredibly cruel world. His only true companion in this world was a version of Dean who became cold and distant, much more so than the Dean most are familiar with. This has led Castiel to lead a life full of instability and incredible violence— And caused him to turn to drugs, sex, and alcohol to cope.

As a result, drugs, alcohol, and the topics of drug and alcohol addiction are highly likely to come up in conversation and meta with him. He is frank about sex. Suicidal thoughts also heavily feature, alongside abuse of authority, assault, body-image issues, brainwashing, death, depression, low self-esteem, manipulation, murder, PTSD, pandemic-style and zombie-style apocalypse, physical and mental torture, demonic and angelic possession, sexual exploitation and assault, sexuality based discrimination, violence, and war.
