Castiel was once an Angel of the Lord, and one of Heaven's soldiers. He has acted in this capacity at least since Lucifer's fall, but has likely been alive since the creation of the Earth.
During the first stages leading up to the Biblical apocalypse, Castiel is tasked with raising The Righteous Man, Dean Winchester, from Hell. After completing this undertaking, he's given the order to assist Dean in his tasks from Heaven. Unbeknownst to Castiel, it is in truth Heaven's duty to set the apocalypse into motion. When he learns this, he initially continues to follow orders, but after gradually becoming closer to Dean, Dean is able to convince him to rebel in order to save humanity.
After this, Castiel is cut off from Heaven.
The original Castiel shares the same history up until 2009, the year when the apocalypse is meant to occur. However, in this timeline of events, Sam Winchester says yes to Lucifer, and allows him to possess his body. However, as Dean doesn't allow Michael to possess him, this causes a stalemate between Heaven and Hell. The Croatoan virus spreads via Hell's machinations, turning the infected into mindless, ravenous beasts. Society breaks down as a result, and eventually, the angels give up the Earth as a lost cause.
Castiel, however, stays with Dean, while Dean hunts his brother, determined to kill the Devil at all costs.
When we meet this Castiel, it's 2014, five years in the future. He's since lost his powers, and now is a broken shell of a man, who regularly imbibes in drink, drugs, and sex in order to ease the pain of his current existence. In the end, he goes to his death when Dean orders him and a group of his men to act as decoys.

castiel had not spent long on earth before enduring incredible amounts of trauma. this trauma colors his personality far into the future. isolated from his his home, heaven, and from his own kind, which have abandoned the earth, he has nothing left but dean— his steward into becoming a member of humanity. but dean's loss of his brother has also rendered him bitter, so castiel follows suit.
castiel wants nothing more than to be loved. however, doesn't believe he deserves to be loved, nor does he believe he's capable of returning love. he struggles to allow himself to be vulnerable due to past experiences. he has been betrayed by every possible source. this defensiveness also extends to humanity, and so to him individuals are often nothing more than a means to an end. sex allows him to have intimacy without truly opening himself up, and it's easy— a simple mechanical process in which he directly transforms himself into something useful to someone, if only for a brief moment in time. likewise, he takes drugs and alcohol to forget what he lacks, and to allow himself to better integrate.
he cares little for himself or his own life in the wake of what he perceives as his own failure to self-actualize. he is not a model angel or a model human, he isn't anything at all— but a pair of hands to hold a gun. he may as well die when dean tells him that it's time.

In general, he appears as though he doesn't give much concern to his appearance.

When relaxing, he chooses woven sandals and looser, more comfortable clothes. When on the move, they're traded out for combat boots and jeans, complimented by military jackets in much the same style that Dean and Sam wear. Most of his clothes are hand-me-downs from Dean and Bobby.
